1. Guitar: I wouldn’t live somewhere without bringing my guitar – and lockdown means I have even more time to play it, without the commute or a social life getting in the way. 
2. Olive oil: if I don’t feel at home in the kitchen, then that place isn’t a home to me. And a kitchen without olive oil isn’t my kitchen! (Not a fancy olive oil, just what I have in at the moment.) 
3. Diary: I’ve had this Pokemon exercise book since childhood and since I was a teenager I’ve used it as a diary for writing about music.
4. Tracksuit bottoms: home is where I can wear comfy clothes all day.
5. Scrapbook: I keep this scrapbook with my girlfriend, who I can’t see at the moment because of lockdown.
6. Watch: this was a 30th birthday present from my brother, who always has good taste.
7. Illustration: this was a 30th birthday present from my sibling, who knows all my interests and influences. 
8. Laptop: my access to the rest of the world, my journal, my external memory, my entertainment, my banking… 

AN ILLUSION

Sam Heydt is an American social practice and recycled media artist born/raised in New York City. Working across different media- film, video, installation, photography, sculpture, sound and text, Heydt presents an abstract proposition for a world on the periphery of history, one that not only appears haunted by the ghosts of the past, but built on it.  Conflating time and place, her layered imagery collides, merges and disrupts logical relationships between occurrences. Through adding and subtracting meaning by combining images of destruction with portrayals of the virtues born from the American Dream, Heydt confronts the disillusionment of our time with the ecological and existential nightmare it is responsible for.

Constructing a complex narrative though the assemblage of movie imagery, war photography and vintage advertisement, Heydt takes the self-deception of the post-war American middle class – i.e., the narrative created by tabloids, television, and cinema – as a leading motive, and sidesteps into iconographically related themes.

In a cage, we look at the world as it burns and goes out.  Appeals to every God that exists reverberating in an echo chamber. We decide what is right and what is wrong, who to kill, who to trample and who to serve.  The occasion to think about how many outstretched hands have asked us for help is lost with the unspoken words and realization that we are all human beings.

3. Hot chillies, because enforced isolation is more bearable when it’s spicy

5. A pipe, because it’s pleasing to the taste, sight, and touch
6. A copy of the New Yorker, to be read while smoking the pipe
7. A house plant to represent my newly discovered green thumb
8. A toolbox, because I’m a fixer

  1. Favourite photo of my daughters by the Wye.
  2. Teapot for one from a treasured friend.
  3. Clay ball I made at college in the 80’s when I thought I could always be a potter if I failed at teaching!
  4. Earthenware jug from my Dad’s family farm in Ripabottoni, Italy.
  5. Wool and needles. I’m not a natural knitter and I have to re-learn casting on/ off etc every time I pick them up.
  6. Blanket for those times my husband turns off the heating-March to October.
  7. Four generations. Granny, Mum, me and my daughter in Wales.
  8. Indian printing blocks – reminder of one of our best holidays.

1. St Ives Picture – childhood holidays and Tracey Oldham (one of my fav artists).
2. Record Player – old records, fun times & Rappers Delight memories of Bridget.
3. Maindenhair Fern – nature and nurture. The plant is high maintenance, frequent bad hair days, lots of TLC & weekly hair trim. This plant will live.
4. Mum & Dads old telephone – if only I could replay the conversations had whilst laying down on the hallway floor.
5. Wooden Apple – from Germany, reminder of friends at home and abroad.
6. My new Sewing Machine – it scares me, keep delaying starting things but ooh the things I “could” make.
7. Photo – family camping holidays & the holidays to come with grandchildren.
8. and HMR – Dad’s beloved queen, family and where I come from.
